Rewarding Employees
This is not just about the yearly inflation pay raise. It is about motivating employees by providing clear guidelines on how their pay is determined and what they can do to increase it. It is also about lateral growth opportunities by improving within their current position as a reasonable alternative to promotions "up the job ladder."

Motivation for employees to improve is limited when they don't know how their pay is determined. Employees are motivated to improve when given clear-cut goals to achieve and action steps to take. And when their efforts are recognized in a tangible way.

Tool #s 13 & 14 in KEi's 14 tool system fall under the Rewarding category.

Tool #13, Setting Base Pay addresses the three most troubling concerns for employees when it comes to their compensation:

"Do they just make up what they are going to pay me?"
"How in the world do they determine it?"
"Am I being paid fairly?"

Employees want to know how their base pay is determined. And they also want to know what they can do to earn more.

This tool gives employers a base pay setting mechanism that enables employees to see exactly how their pay is determined. It demonstrates to employees that they are being treated with openness and that their pay is determined by facts, not arbitrarily. Most importantly, it shows employees what they can do to improve their base pay.

The tool gives employers the following pay setting data for each job category:

  • "Beginner" level thru "master" level definitions of performance for each priority job skill.
  • Competitive market pay steps matched to each expertise level described.
  • Pay adjusting criteria for the expertise levels applied consistently to get results.

Tool #14, Team Goal Setting & Incentive Pay Calculating is a mechanism for motivating work teams through clear-cut goals and the understanding of what they must personally accomplish to share in the cash rewards distributed when the team achieves its cash generating goals.

This tool provides a standard template for writing team goals in each of five goal categories:

  • Customer relationships
  • Product/service improvements
  • New processes that drive business growth
  • Time & cost reduction of existing work processes
  • Contract supplier performance

Also included is a mechanism that calculates the dollar value of completing cash-generating goals, and a mechanism to activate an incentive pay distribution template that divides the financial gains between the employer and the individual employees of the teams that accomplish each cash-generating goal.
